The Trump Government Shutdown Continues
Hey, how are you doing today?
As of writing this FTC, the Trump Government Shutdown has entered day eight. Slight tweak to the memory: This is Trump’s third government shutdown. He had two in his first term.
According to NPR: ”Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer reiterated his position that Republican leaders need to negotiate with Democrats over expiring health care tax credits before his party would support a funding bill to reopen the government. He told reporters that a future commitment to negotiate would not be enough to win Democrats' support.” I do not know why the Democrats would not opt for trusting the GOP when they say there would be a “future commitment to negotiate.” Even Marjorie Taylor Greene agrees that the ACA tax credits need to be restored. Who saw that coming?
The question many are asking is, given these combative times where Trump is sending the military into our cities, “Should healthcare be the only issue the Senate Democrats should be fighting for?”
William Kristol in The Bulwark quotes Abraham Lincoln: “As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew.” Kristol suggests: ”Don’t Democrats need to say, in light of new circumstances, that they will not vote to fund an administration that’s trying to impose martial law at home and to start unauthorized and unjustified wars abroad? Don’t Democrats need to demand that provisions curbing the administration’s authoritarian moves—or at least provisions guaranteeing Congress votes on various aspects of the use of military force at home and abroad—need to be attached to legislation funding the government?”
Then we had the Academy Award-winning performance of the B-list actress, former Qatar foreign agent and U.S. Attorney General Pammy Jo Bondi sneering at the Democratic senators where they dared to ask questions of oversight. As we have all said before, those Epstein files must hold more terrifying and condemning information than we can ever imagine.
The good news is that one of the original, “Do Not Obey In Advance” heroes, Alexander Vindman, will be our keynote speaker at our Nov. 4 gala fundraiser. Tickets are going fast. (Get your tickets here and scroll down for more info.)
The No Kings day protest will be held in Cedarburg on Oct. 18 from 9:30-10:30. (Note the new start time.) I am asking each of you to come and bring a friend; the camaraderie and community at these protests are uplifting. I appreciate the work by our community friends in Ozaukee Indivisible.
We need to think and act differently in these lawless times. Remember, we are the majority. 60% of America disapproves of Trump’s policies, and 75% blames the Republican Party for the Trump Government Shutdown. You are not alone.
Thank you for reading.
