Never Doubt That You Can Change The World
Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” I am certain you have heard this quote more than once before. It applies to the world we live in now. The phone calls you make, the postcards and letters you send, the peaceful protests you participate in all matter. Continue to have conversations with your friends, neighbors and families.
One issue that we have to talk about is the high cost of healthcare. The Republican Big Beautiful Bill will only make that worse. Currently in Wisconsin, medical debt is the number one cause of bankruptcy. On the U.S. Senate floor last Thursday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren gave her Republican colleagues a choice: “Undo the damage they caused to the healthcare of millions of Americans by slashing Medicaid and insurance subsidies, or explain to the public why they refuse to do so—even if it means shutting down the government.”
According to the Common Dreams website, “Warren spoke about a proposal released by the Democrats Wednesday night to keep the government running through October 31—averting a shutdown at the beginning of next month—if the GOP agrees to restore the $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts and extend the Affordable Care Act subsidies to keep out-of-pocket premiums from rising by an average of 75% for millions of people who purchase health insurance through the ACA.”
So what was Trump’s response when he was asked to negotiate with the Democrats? “After reviewing the details of the unserious and ridiculous demands being made by the Minority Radical Left Democrats in return for their Votes to keep our thriving Country open,” Trump began, “I have decided that no meeting with their Congressional Leaders could possibly be productive.”
The president then listed crazy demands that he falsely accused Democrats of making, including “$1 trillion in new spending to continue free healthcare for illegal aliens,” as well as policies to “have dead people on the Medicaid roles,” to “allow illegal alien criminals to steal billions of dollars in American taxpayer benefits,” and to “essentially create Transgender operations for everybody.”
A lot of you have met Senator Warren, does that sound remotely like a proposal she would make? I guess that level of evil crazy still works for some people.
I also liked Mr. Tough Guy Trump’s yelling about how pregnant women should “just tough it out if they are in pain or have a fever, because Tylenol causes autism.” Where on earth. A lot of women of my generation were the “Natural Childbirth Mothers,” which meant ZERO drugs even during the actual labor and delivery. So, please spare me the “tough it out” speech, President Bone Spurs.
Seriously, I believe Democrats have to seize this moment and work for the welfare of all Americans. I have been relatively lucky my whole life. My parents had health insurance for our family courtesy of my father’s employer. I had health insurance for my family through my employer, and now I have Medicare that I paid into my entire working life. Everyone should be so lucky. I encourage our Wisconsin member of the U.S. Senate, Tammy Baldwin, to stand strong and vote to hold Republicans accountable for these deadly healthcare cuts.
Please join us on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. at our office to learn more from State Sen. Jodi Habush Sinykin, Assemblywoman Deb Andraca and attorney Nick Korger on how the Republican’s big bill will affect us. (Graphic below.)
Thanks for reading. See you at the protests (including the next No Kings Protest in Cedarburg on Oct. 18) and our November 4th Gala.
