So Many Ozaukee Democrats!

Great county party meeting Wednesday night! It was not quite a marathon but close. We had 90 people attend and hold down the fort for very close to two hours.

In attendance was Jeff Hansher, who won his primary challenge for Ozaukee County Board Seat 24. Of the 286 votes cast, Jeff won 198 of them. James Krane came in second with 56 votes, and the third candidate Mike Basso received 32 votes. Congratulations, Jeff. On to victory in the general spring election on April 7.

We heard from many other candidates for local and state elections and also from Amanda Bell, who is running in the 6th Congressional District (CD) primary to unseat Glenn Grothman. Amanda is one of the five great candidates we have who are running in the Aug. 11 partisan primary.

Election dates and rules can be confusing, I really appreciate all of you who continue to be informed and involved. Leave no yard unsigned; pick up your local candidate yard signs as well as yard signs for Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Chris Taylor on Saturdays 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the office.

If you want to see our congressman in action questioning the most incompetent and corrupt Attorney General, Pam Bondi, in my lifetime, you can watch it here.

Glenn tries desperately to look smart and smug when “questioning” Pammy Bondi. He falsely claims that there is NO DATA or STATISTICS kept on the immigration status of inmates in jails. Perhaps he should really ask his “sheriffs” if that is true.

According to the ACLU: “Many Wisconsin law enforcement agencies track and share the immigration status of inmates, particularly through federal partnerships and automated, biometric identification systems (Secure Communities) that check bookings against immigration records. As of July 2025, over a dozen counties have 287(g) agreements with ICE to question and hold inmates for immigration purposes, and many receive federal funds for this data sharing. Agencies in the United States often track and share the immigration status of inmates, primarily through partnerships with federal immigration authorities. When individuals are booked into jails, their fingerprints are automatically checked against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) databases to identify their citizenship and immigration history.”

And no, Glenn, no matter how hard you try to flirt with her, Pammy Bondi will not go to a Brat Fry with you in Sheboygan Falls.

Nancy Miller and Elaine Vokoun, two DPOC members who represent us on the state party’s Resolution and Platform Committee, gave us a lesson and an ask: “Could we create a resolution for the DPW party platform (the principles that guide our work, the policies we believe in, and the beliefs we hold)?”

Members can create new resolutions to propose to the county party, which then can be approved at a monthly meeting. Then, those approved resolutions can be presented to the 6th CD at its convention in May. Our county party Resolutions Group (“party”) will meet on Feb. 28 at 1 p.m., with Nancy and Elaine facilitating.

You may also write your own resolutions to send to Nancy and Elaine, who will then contact you via phone to discuss your resolution. These resolutions, when approved, can become part of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin's official platform. Perhaps you believe as Elaine does that we have a resolution supporting the freedom of the press or unmasking ICE… Your values become our resolutions.

On Tuesday, we lost a civil rights hero. The Reverend Jesse Jackson died in Chicago at the age of 84. In addition to establishing the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and a myriad of other social justice organizations, Jackson ran for president in 1984 and 1988. Many have said that his run for president broke the ice ceiling for President Barack Obama.

Jackson was very active in the Milwaukee civil rights movement. A former student of mine who was working with Jackson in Chicago in 2024 called me and told me that the reverend wanted to come to Ozaukee County and sit and meet with our members. Unfortunately, his health did not allow that trip. How cool would that have been?

My husband and I attended the 1988 Democratic National Convention in Atlanta. I conclude my newsletter this week with Reverend Jackson’s famous speech from that convention. (Watch here.) Bless you and thank you, Reverend Jackson.
