Wisconsin Candidate Updates

We had a great 6th CD Dinner on Saturday. Ozaukee County was well represented. Thank you to all who attended! State Senator Kristin Alfheim moderated a very well-executed 6th CD Candidate Forum. Great candidates with great answers to the questions put before them. Marcia Steele, Chair of the Winnebago County Democrats, was the recipient of the John Race Award. John Race was the last and only Democrat to represent the 6th CD in Congress. That was in 1964. We will change that in November.

The Marquette Poll came out this week with interesting results. Charles Franklin, who is the Director of the Marquette Law School Poll, has presented his findings to our county party on more than one occasion. The questions this time varied from the traditional candidate questions into questions about data centers and AI. The full poll and tabs can be found here.

Reading the results, while Trump's numbers are poor, so are the Democratic Party’s. The political makeup of the people surveyed was 36% Republican, 32% Democratic, and 33% Independent. I will see if we can get Franklin to attend a county party meeting after the April election.

News in our State Legislature: Robin Vos will not run again, so I guess my Assemblyman Paul Melotik will have to find someone else to tell him how to vote. Thank goodness we have Assembly candidate Dana Glasstein who is already working hard to make certain we don’t have a replay of Robin Vos Melotik in Assembly District 22 after Nov. 3. In case you think I am exaggerating, Melotik votes with Vos over 90% of the time. He does photo ops with the right-wing book-banning group Moms for Liberty and votes against 93% of what Wisconsinites believe in when it comes to the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program.

After the publishing of Melotik’s last email newsletter, dated Feb. 20, where he posed the question, “As the legislative session comes to a close today, which bill do you believe was the most important one passed?” I responded, “Why in the world do you boys get a full-time salary and benefits is beyond me?” I simply questioned why they should be getting full-time salaries and benefits when they only worked two months this year. Boy, did I get a sassy response. His staffer must be trained by former State Senator Duey Stroebel.

Finally, I need to comment on Trump's stupid statements and sexist humor when it comes to the U.S. women’s national hockey team. When he invited the men’s team to the State of the Union Address and to the White House, he couldn’t resist saying that if he did not invite the women’s team, ”I do believe I probably would be impeached.” Ha! Ha! Ha! What a funny old felon. The men’s team erupted in laughter. Many of them have since apologized. I don’t know if FBI Director Kash Patel was still doing beer bongs in the locker room at the time. What a classless and shameless Republican party. I am surprised Kristi Noem didn't jump out of a cake.

My vintage of women were not allowed to play any interscholastic high school or competitive college sports. In my senior year of high school, we had one sport, track. My physics teacher was my coach, and he had me run hurdles. At that time, there were only boy’s height hurdles. Right out of the gate in practice, I caught my foot and flew, splitting my chin open. Oh yes, our gym uniforms were our track uniforms.

When I was a high school teacher, I enjoyed and, I have to admit, I envied watching my female student athletes compete. There is still much discrimination and inequality when it comes to the difference between male and female sports, especially when we jump into the professional side and look at salaries. The minimum salary for an NHL player is $775,000 for men, and the minimum for the PWHL is $35,000 for women. I understand revenue, etc., but come on.

Back to Ozaukee County 2026. Please volunteer to help our local candidates and show up at the Cedarburg peaceful protest on Saturday and stay strong.

Thanks for reading.
