Local Dems Make Gains Amidst GOP Chaos
We had a rowdy county party meeting Wednesday night with more than 80 people, plus nine people online. It was good to see many of our successful candidates, and we appreciated their kind words.
I received a phone call from Sen. Tammy Baldwin on Monday, congratulating us for flipping the county for Supreme Court Justice-elect Chris Taylor. Baldwin thanked us for our hard work and wanted us to know that we will continue our successes into the fall election. She is looking forward to working with us. No, it was not a robocall or donation solicitation. It was just a flat-out sincere thank-you for the work we have been doing.
Yay, us! We're looking at you, Dana Glasstein, Jack Holzman and Deb Andraca, for victory on Nov. 3.
When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a nun. I had watched Audrey Hepburn in The Nun’s Story on NBC’s Saturday Night at the Movies. (Yes, I am old.) I really thought it would be cool to wear one of those habits. I was walking around the house with my crinoline half slip on my head pretending I was a nun. My mother was watching me slowly moving around the house with my hands in prayer. “Debbie, what are you doing?” she said, not very gently. I said, “I want to be a nun.” She replied, “You can’t! We are Lutheran.”
Which brings me to this past week of Trump posting himself on Truth Social healing the sick as Jesus did. When the right wing went after him, he did a retraction claiming he thought he was posting himself as a doctor. Meanwhile, claiming to know more about theology than the Pope, J.D. Vance, Speaker Mike Johnson, and Trump himself all had to dig the hole deeper.
Then, in a typical act of MAGA retribution, according to The Miami Times: “The Trump Admin has abruptly canceled an $11M contract with Catholic Charities to shelter and care for migrant children who enter the U.S. alone, ending a relationship between the Catholic Church and the U.S. government dating back to the first arrivals of Cuban exiles in South Florida.”
That was in the 1960s. Wondering how the Cuban vote in Florida will land with this. My guess is that the Catholic Church will be around longer than the Trump administration.
We are in a war, we are not in a war. The Strait of Hormuz (or Straits of Vermouth as Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent called them) are open, or they are closed, or we never use them. While this all makes for great memes, it does not make for sound economic, political or social policies. It does not keep us safe.
We will have more great candidates at our May meeting. Please sign up for the 6th CD Convention May 17 in Oshkosh and the State Party Convention June 13-14 in Madison. Let me know if you want to be a delegate. We have the ability to send 52 delegates.
